Proudly serving the Kingsport and Johnson City region

Hey Guys, It’s Derek from Pink Duck Plumbing

I want to give you three quick tips on what not to put down your garbage disposal during Thanksgiving.

1. Don’t put fat down your drain.

This time of year, we love roasted turkeys. They look amazing, and those drippings? They’re great for making gravy—but not for your drains! When you pour fat down the drain, it may seem fine as it goes down in liquid form. But as it travels through your pipes and cools, it solidifies into a solid mass, restricting water flow. Trust me, that’s not something you want to deal with.

2. Avoid putting starchy foods like potatoes down the drain.

Sweet potato casserole and mashed potatoes with gravy—delicious for your plate but terrible for your plumbing. When starch goes down the drain, it absorbs water and expands, potentially causing blockages in your pipes. It might seem harmless at first, but it can lead to some serious problems.

3. Keep eggshells out of your disposal.

Some people believe eggshells will clean or sharpen their disposal blades. That’s a myth! The membrane inside the eggshell can get wrapped around the disposal’s moving parts, causing significant issues. Throw your eggshells in the trash and enjoy your amazing desserts without worrying about clogging your disposal.

And one last thing…

Take a deep breath—this is Thanksgiving! Take a moment to give thanks. Today, we’re thankful for you: our customers and our community. We’re so grateful you trust us to help you maintain your home.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Pink Duck Plumbing!
